Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is 1.5 line spacing; uses a 11-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  • Where available, doi numbers for articles have been provided.

Consistent with current APA Guidelines, Dance Research Aotearoa requires authors to include the doi of manuscripts they reference where this information is available. One quick resource for doing this is provided HERE

Author Guidelines

Submissions should be original research relevant to the journal's focus. All submissions should be made to the Editor through the online submission process and with the understanding that the submission has not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere.

Submissions may be of varied length depending on the type of submission and formatting may also vary depending on the type of representation included in the submission. All submissions should include an abstract of 100-150 words and utilise APA Referencing Style (6th ed). Images, tables and moving images in submissions accepted for publication must be provided in the format appropriate for online publication.

General requirements of the journal

  1. Use the APA Referencing System consistently for references within your text and in the final Reference List, regardless of your overall representational style. Please take particular care to ensure accuracy of any quotations and references.
  2. Include an abstract of approximately 150 words, regardless of your overall representational style.
  3. Use Endnotes as opposed to Footnotes, if notes are required.
  4. Ensure that any images to be included in the journal are either .jpeg or .png files and are no larger than 400k. Please place all images within the text and also upload images as clearly named separate attachments. Written permission must be gained for use of images and all clearly identified individuals featured in images must have approved the image for use in this publication. A specific form will be provided for authors to gain permission from those featured in their images and authors must provide a copy of this form with their final submission. Please include image credits, title of each image and, where relevant, names of individuals featured. (Also see point 6.).
  5. Links to moving images can be made by including website links to YouTube or other online sources, if relevant.
  6. In submissions representing research undertaken with others, discussion of methodology, ethical considerations and approval processes may be central to the discussion. If not, you should include an endnote in which you state that your research was approved by your institutional Ethics Committee or follows other ethical guidelines for research. For example, research involving interviews with participants, excerpts of other's writing, participant observations, choreographic practice and photographs should have involved consideration of issues relating to consent, ownership and anonymity/use of pseudonyms/consent for participants to be identified.
  7. While it is possible for papers with different representational styles to be included within the journal, simplicity and consistency within your submission will assist in the production of the journal. You will be sent a proof of your submission before publication.
  8. While the language of this journal publication is normally English, in some cases an article may be published in both English and te reo Māori (Māori language). Use of te reo Māori, Pacific languages and others, is likely in Dance Research Aotearoa. In the first instance of use of te reo Māori, Pacific or other languages, please italicize ngā kupu (words), followed by a common contextual interpretation or translation (in brackets). Where a more lengthy explanation or discussion is required this should follow in the text, or in an endnote, as appropriate.
  9. Please ensure that you have deleted your name/s as authors from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.
  10. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file. (See more under the link to Ensuring a Blind Review.)
